Sampson Shnurman

Born and raised on this very ranch, I grew up immersed in the farming and livestock lifestyle and knew I wanted to continue to be involved in agriculture. At 14, I became certified in artificial insemination (AI), started breeding cows and have continued to custom breed cattle ever since. When I graduated high school, my father encouraged me to attend college and find a career path other than farming/agriculture. During my college years, my father passed away which led me back to working at home on our ranch. I graduated in 2010 with a double major in athletic training and exercise science. I did this all while doing work at the ranch. After college, I started my own strength training business and worked at a bull stud part-time. In 2015,I left the strength training business and started working construction alongside Travis (the beginning of our partnership and friendship). At the same time, I started a business with my brother, Isaiah, developing our own cattle herd along with providing AI service, heifer development program, semen collection, and embryo services.

In 2018, I was forced to make a difficult decision and left the cattle business completely in order to focus on my growing family. My wife, Jess, and I had a young son and were expecting our second child, when we found out that she wouldn’t survive due to a birth defect. On August 29, 2018, our daughter Lilah was born. We were able to take her home and spend nine days with her before she passed away on September 7, becoming the youngest organ donor in Iowa. Lilah’s death had a massive impact on my view of life, causing me to realize how much I missed working in the cattle industry and living life on the ranch.

In 2020, a few months after having our daughter Maryn, Jess and I had the opportunity to purchase the family ranch. We jumped at the chance to get back to a way of life that we truly had be longing for. Purchasing the ranch would once again allow me the opportunity to get back into raising cattle. Knowing we had purchased the ranch, Travis and his brother Adam proposed starting our own herd of cattle. Utilizing my strengths of AI and cattle development in combination with Travis’s and Adam's entrepreneurial knowledge, we bought our first group of cattle and SP Cattle Company was created. We are running pure bred angus cattle trying to create good maternal cattle that are moderate framed, with excellent longevity. We are doing this through embryo transfer and artificial insemination. While we are still young in the business, we look forward to providing quality bulls and females for sale to meet our customers demands.
